Let us help: What to wear to a Kpop audition?

I'm sure you've all heard of Lee Hi and 15&. Those two groups (among others) were made possible because of the cool competition show, SBS Kpop Star.
But what does that have to do with us?
Well, Kworld Style has joined SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, Hyundai, allkpop.com, and KASA as sponsors for SBS Kpop Star.

If anyone is auditioning, you could share your audition outfit with us, or if anyone needs advice on what to wear to the audition you all can ask us!
Edit: If you need hair/makeup ideas, please email us a picture (info@kworldstyle.com)

The application deadlines for the audition are as follows:
Chicago & Atlanta : 8/3
LA : 8/10
Click here for more information about the US auditions.

Quick tips:
-Be comfortable, especially if you dancing
-Be yourself; they're there to see you.
-Keep it natural (hair & makeup)
-If you have contacts, wear them. Glasses will reflect stage lights weirdly.

    1. We can definitely help, I have a few questions though:
(1)What's your style/genre? Are you a ballad person? Hip-hop? Pop? Sexy? Cute? etc.
      (2) What agency are you hoping to get?
      (3) Are you dancing?
      (4) What's your gender?

  3. I'm going to the one in LA. I'm not too sure on what to wear though. Help? c:

*Based on some of your questions above, here's some info about me haha.
    1. I'm more of a pop/sexy/cute person.
    2. I'm hoping to either get into JYP or YG.
    3. No I'm not dancing.
    4. I'm a girl.

    1. OK, I would recommend high waisted shorts with a crop top, jacket, and heels. If you're more comfortable in long pants or sneakers, wear those. Try tattoo tights if you want to cover yourself more. But, don't wear them with heels.

If you're going for a sexy look, wear blue and red or black and purple. If you want to be cuter I suggest wearing pink or yellow. Maybe a pink dress?

Auditions like this take a while. And let me tell you from experience with something similar, you do a lot of standing, so if heels aren't your thing, don't force yourself to wear them. Same goes with the jacket. Companies are looking for people who potentially fit their image. This means that for YG, try to be a bit more relaxed and hip-hop. For JYP, I would take cues off of Miss A and Wonder Girl's street fashion.

    2. Oh my thank you so much!

And since I'm not dancing, do you have any suggestions on how I should do my hair? I thought leaving it down would be a bit plain. I have hair that's just a bit below my shoulders, if that helps?

  4. Could you help me as well? I'm going to the one in ATL. (:

Seeing the comments above and your questions, here's my info.

    2. I'm hoping to get into YG.
    3. Yes, I will be dancing.
    4. I'm a girl.

    1. Ok, thanks! :) thanks soooo much, it's really going to help me a lot!!
Do you guys recommend any hair styles, too?

Should I leave my hair down, put it up, curl it, etc..

    2. If you're dancing, try an up-do. Maybe something like Taeyeon in 'Run devil Run'. If you're not doing something as powerful, do what you think looks the best. I don't know your face shape or hair length, etc. But long hair is seen as more formal.

      Delete
    3. Ohh, I see. :)
And for make-up, which would be highly recommended:

Some make-up or just no make-up at all?
Because I was doing my research and there were a lot of sites that said No Make-up at all is the best. But, a little make-up wouldn't hurt, right?

      Delete
    4. For eyes, I would do highlighter on your brow, a neutral eye-shadow with a little sparkle, eyeliner, and a little mascara. For face, do a BB cream or tinted moisturizer, a powder set/ finish, and maybe a little bronzer. Lips, just do chapstick or something.

The goal is to look healthy and attractive. But also, sellable. This means they need to be able to project what they want you to look like as well as see how you can sell yourself. Companies are more likely to take someone who they can see being sold in Korea, so don't do clubbing makeup, etc. Keep it light, but do wear some. Uneven skin-tones are not fun for anyone. Keep in mind that you will be on stage or under some sort of lights; this means that it will be harder to see what you put on. So, if you put a little on, it will look like you're wearing nothing.

    5. Alright, thanks! :)
It was the exact type if make-up I was thinking :D

  6. I'm going to the Chicago audition, and I think my case might be a bit worse than some people, I'm overweight, so I worry that what I wear won't look good on me..

    1. My style is more Ballad, I like cute things, but I don't think they look good on me..
    2. I want to get into SM or YG.

    3. I can't dance... :(

    4. I'm a girl :D

    1. Not "worse", only different. I recommend either wearing a looser dress or a baggy tee shirt with leggings (think Mercedes from Glee). Both will draw the attention away from your mid-section. Try to find a cropped jacket to go over top.

This is the time to be comfortable with who you want to be. Meaning, if you want to be an all-out aegyo person, show the judges that is who you see yourself as an artist. You're there to sell you. So don't let anyone tell you you're now good enough because of something so malleable like the number on the scale. Some of the best singers ever have been fuller-bodied.

Here's my set for you (since I don't know your size, I choose plus-size items): http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=91092384
There are three sort-of outfits plus dresses and etc. tops. I'm going to try to make you another one that is cuter. This one is sexier.

  7. It's been highly recommended by peopel who've done super deep research that you wear casual, but comfortable clothes, no hair product and no makeup. So that they can see your bare face as well as your talent.

  8. Is it possible to go with the European appearance of Russia?

    2. line you waterline and lid in dark purple. Draw it a bit more almond looking with you tear-duct area facing down and then fill in any space you have with white liner, or you could use a wet powder brush and line the difference with a skin-toned shadow. Generally Asian eyes are a bit more closed off. And I've never seen a way to create monolids, so I'm sorry.

Keep in mind that if you close your eyes off too much, from farther away, they can't be seen. If they are a feature you don't like, then fine, but if they are one of your good features, I would accentuate them.

    1. Hi.. Again! >.< lols I like what you offered, but I still have a few questions. Since I'm playing my flute, what kind of hair styles would you prefer me to do?
As for makeup, I usually just put on some cover up products and eyeliner; do you think that's all I need?

      Delete
    2. OK. For flute, put your hair on the opposite side. Maybe do a side french braid into a ponytail. I'm not sure hat your face-shape is, so maybe you just want to have your hair down and move it to one shoulder.

For make-up, I recommend cover-up products, highlight on your brow, eyeliner, a neutral semi-shimmery shadow, a light shadow for your tear-duct area, and some mascara. Finish it up with a finishing powder (e.g. mineral veil). Keep it natural, but pick an eyeliner color that sets of your eye color. I recommend purple, blue, or dark green because they bring out many colors in your eyes, unless you have grey eye, then do black.

I'm quoting myself from earlier so I don't have to type it again. "Keep it light, but do wear some. Uneven skin-tones are not fun for anyone. Keep in mind that you will be on stage or under some sort of lights; this means that it will be harder to see what you put on. So, if you put a little on, it will look like you're wearing nothing."

      Good luck!

  12. Hello, I think its great you are being so helpful! Can you do the same for me?

    1. My style is casual
    2. Either one of the companies I have no right to be picky. Plus last year I auditioned we didn't get to choose which company we auditioned for at the local auditions.
    3. Singing/Rap (In Korean)
    4. Male (Non-Asian)
    5. Yes I know my chances are very slim but I'd rather try anyway. Don't worry about hurting my feeling your complete honesty would help a ton :D

    1. For you, I didn't know how aggressive you wanted your style to be, so I made ten casual outfits: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=91219162. Stick to solids and colors that look good with your skin-tone. If your have yellow undertones go with warm colors. If you're super pale like I am, stick to cool tones. The lights will accentuate the lightness of your skin, so balance it out with darker colors. Stick to sneakers or combat boots. NO flip-flops! For accessories, you could wear a cap, tie, or thick bracelet. NO sunglasses.

Bring a jacket just in case it's cold.
But make sure your outfit looks OK on it's own. Also, I know you're a guy, but putting on a little BB cream and mascara may subtly help your image.

      Fighting!

      Delete
    2. Sorry Im not sure what undertones are... lol I have a dark skintone if thats what it means. Im not sure what colors work well with me skintone either :/
And as for the bb cream you have to find the right color for that right? Is there one that works for all skintones?

  13. Hi, can you help me too, please? I'm going to the Chicago audition. :D

    1. My style can either be formal or casual. I can go from ballad to pop.
    2. I'm hoping to go to SM.
    3. singing
    4. Male (Asian)

  14. Oh haha I'm the one who was auditioning in Chicago.
    Here:

My style is kind of just cute and casual, and maybe a little pop. And I'm also short too.

I'm really not sure which agency..... My mind isn't really set on a specific agency, but I feel JYP would be like my kind of speed and I really like YG. I'd be happy to get any agency, really.

Yes and no. I'm not a dancer but they may ask for dancing so I'm dancing to part of EXO K's MAMA. And I dont think heels will work for that dance.... I'm also going to rap too, along with my singing. I'm really not that great but how many 13 year olds do this? lol

I'm a 13 year old girl. ^^ I am overweight a little but it really doesn't show... I was planning on wearing jeans and my converse and some cool shirt, but I thought getting suggestions would be better. I'm getting my hair cut short this week so luckily no need to worry about my hair.

    THANK YOU!

    1. I think what you were planning on wearing is fine! Since you're a little overweight, I would wear a darker oversized tee (I picturing the Katie Eary tees) with black jeans. The dark colors will make your look slimmer while the shirt won't hug your curves. But don't make both your top and your bottoms baggy, or else you'll just look like a plastic bag >.<.

I think that having a cool, short haircut will contrast nicely with the outfit. The only think I will warn your about is converses have no arch support or anything. They have flat, rubber bottoms. This makes it hard to do some intricate dances in them, so practice with them on to make sure they feel OK before you audition.

      Fighting!

    2. Thank you! I will definitely try that out and dance with the shoes. :D
      FIGHTING!

  15. hahahaha it's okay if u stalk me i guess hahaahaha. ok um i think it's just i seem to act cute but don't worry i have a lot of different characteristics hahahaha. but yea ill keep #1 in mind =) and I want to rap but the songs i chose don't have rap in them.... should I just prepare one separately just in case they ask?? and I am playing instruments actually. I have 2 guitar songs (just in case) and a piano song. and yea I'm pretty Korean hahaha i can speak fluently so let's hope the audition goes well and I'll definitely try out the side braid hair style =) THANK YOU!!!

  16. I'm sorry( I have a question not related to clothing! Up to how many you can send your video to YouTube? Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm going to the Atlanta audition. And I'm also overweight (i.e. heavy in American standards but extremely fat by Korean standards! hehe) I don't think the chance will come my way again though, so though I wish I could lose weight first, oh well.... gonna give it a shot anyways.

    1) I fluctuate between two fashion styles on a daily basis.... one is very much boho chic. I live in Mexico so I like the long skirts, flowy tops, chunky native jewelry, etc. however I know that isn't what the companies really represent. the other style I like (but cant seem to pull off) is classic glam. I do love a cat eye and the 1960's kind of big hair. think lee hyori in miss korea or adele on the red carpet. :) my singing style is ballad/acoustic.

so I want to have my own style but I want to appeal to the companies too. help?? :)

2nd question.... I don't actually think I will make it to signing with a company. my goal is just to make it to the 2nd round so I can get a trip to Korea. :D

    i won't be dancing.

i'm a girl (well a woman but there is no age limit to the competition. Lol)

  18. Thank you very much~~ all I have to do is but a sports bra to hold my Chest down and a baggy shirt. My parents don't buy me baggy stuff offend cause they don't want me to be boyish lol.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Try sneaker heels or converses? You could wear the dress with a faux leather jacket and converses. That way, you can take off the jacket and dance well. Just make sure to wear spandex or tights (or both) underneath. Tattoo tights are really popular right now!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Okay so I really, really really need help. Uhm, I have a a dress I wanted to wear, but since I'll be dancing, I don't think it's a good idea. I am planning to either wear converses or DCs but I simply have no idea with what. I don't want to show too much skin for the first time, so high waisted shorts aren't something I'd want.

    (1) My style is more Pop and Hip Hop
    (2) The agency I want is mainly SM but YG would be fine as well.
    (3) Yes, I will be singing, Dancing, and rapping.
    (4) Female
